wpForo vs bbPress: Why the Default WordPress Forum Plugin Is No Longer Enough

For years, bbPress was the answer to “how do I add a forum to WordPress?” It was built by Matt Mullenweg himself. It lived under the WordPress.org umbrella. It was lightweight, free, and simple. For a long time, that was enough.

It’s not enough anymore. And it hasn’t been for a while.

The last bbPress release, version 2.6.9, shipped on November 29, 2021. That’s over three and a half years without a single update. No security patches. No bug fixes. No new features. No compatibility updates for newer PHP or WordPress versions. The Wordfence security plugin now actively flags bbPress as “abandoned” in its vulnerability scans and recommends replacing it.

Meanwhile, wpForo has grown into the most feature-complete WordPress forum plugin on the market, culminating in the wpForo 3.0 “AI Edition” release earlier this year, the first WordPress forum plugin with built-in artificial intelligence.

This isn’t a close comparison. But it’s one that needs to be written, because thousands of WordPress sites are still running bbPress without realizing what they’re missing or the risks they’re taking.

The development problem

Let me be direct about what “no updates since 2021” actually means for your forum.

WordPress itself has shipped twelve major releases since bbPress 2.6.9 came out. PHP has moved from 8.0 to 8.3, with 8.0 already past end-of-life. Every one of those updates could introduce incompatibilities that bbPress can’t fix because nobody is maintaining the code.

No one is currently being paid to maintain bbPress. Hence no one is updating even the “tested to” value.

– Robin W, bbPress.org forum moderator, 2024

This isn’t speculation from outsiders. This is bbPress‘s own forum moderator explaining the situation. When the person answering support questions on the official forums tells you that nobody is being paid to work on the software, that’s as clear a signal as you’ll get.

The security implications are real. BlogVault, a respected WordPress security company, published a review in early 2026 with a blunt recommendation: “We do not recommend using the bbPress plugin. The infrequent updates pose a huge security risk.”

By contrast, wpForo ships updates regularly, multiple times per month during active development cycles. The 3.0 release alone was the largest single update any WordPress forum plugin has ever shipped, adding 360° AI features, a full analytics dashboard, five forum layouts, and a complete design refresh.

What bbPress gives you

In fairness, bbPress is not broken. It still works on most WordPress installations. It still creates forums and topics and replies. For the simplest possible use case, “I need a basic discussion board on my WordPress site”, bbPress can technically do the job.

But “technically works” is a low bar. Here’s what bbPress offers out of the box:

  • Basic forum and topic creation
  • User roles (Keymaster, Moderator, Participant, Spectator, Blocked)
  • Akismet integration for spam filtering
  • BuddyPress integration
  • Topic tags
  • Shortcode-based embedding

That’s essentially the entire feature set. No user profiles beyond WordPress defaults. No private messaging. No notifications. No reactions or likes. No multiple forum layouts. No content moderation tools beyond Akismet. No search beyond WordPress’s built-in keyword search. No analytics. No file attachments without a third-party plugin.

A reviewer on WordPress.org put it simply in March 2025:

It looks so old now, without the features and rendering the other forum programs have now.

– Li-An, WordPress.org review, March 2025

What wpForo gives you

wpForo 3.0 ships with a feature set that would have been unimaginable in a free WordPress plugin even two years ago. Let me walk through the highlights.

Five distinct forum layouts

Where bbPress offers one layout (a basic threaded list that hasn’t changed since 2012), wpForo ships five: Extended (traditional with rich previews), Simplified (clean, minimal), Q&A (Stack Overflow-style), Threaded (Reddit-style nested), and Boxed (card-based modern). Each is fully responsive and designed for 2026 screens.

Here are the five layouts, each fully responsive and built for modern screens:

  1. Extended Layout: Classic forum layout with a unique feature to show one level deeper information in advance. You can see the latest topics of each forum on Forum List and latest posts of each topic on Topic List.
  2. Simplified Layout: Light, modern and beautiful forum layout with topic and post author avatars on forum and topic lists.
  3. Question and Answer Layout: Complete Q&A discussion board for professional support and communities similar to Stack Overflow. Perfect platform for users to ask and answer questions, and through membership and active participation, to vote up or down.
  4. Threaded Layout: You can use this layout for any kind of discussions, especially for support forums, support tickets, product reviewing discussions and thread oriented forums.
  5. Boxed Layout (NEW): Brand new modern card-based design with beautiful visual presentation. Features elegant forum cards with icons, hover effects, and grid organization. The most visually striking layout, perfect for communities that want a contemporary, magazine-style appearance.

bbPress offers one layout. One. And it hasn’t changed since 2012.

360° AI Features

This is the category that makes the comparison almost unfair. wpForo 3.0 ships with:

  1. AI Semantic Search, finds content by meaning, not just keywords
  2. AI Topic Summarization, one-click summaries of long threads
  3. AI Topic Suggestions, prevents duplicates before they’re posted
  4. AI Translation, automatic across 100+ languages
  5. AI ChatBot, trained on your forum’s content
  6. AI Content Moderation, spam, toxicity, and policy compliance
  7. AI Spam Detection, 99.9% accuracy across 10 layers
  8. AI Bot Reply, auto-answers to unanswered topics
  9. AI Tasks, automated topic generation, tagging, maintenance
  10. AI Analytics & Insights, engagement patterns, retention, recommendations

bbPress has zero AI features. Zero. And given the development status, it will never have any.

Built-in moderation and anti-spam

bbPress relies entirely on Akismet for spam filtering, a general-purpose tool that catches maybe 80-90% of forum spam. wpForo‘s AI moderation catches 99.9%, plus it handles toxic content, hate speech, and custom policy violations. Moderators see the AI’s reasoning for every flagged post and can override decisions. The system learns from overrides.

Rich user profiles, messaging, and engagement

wpForo includes member profiles with avatars, activity feeds, reputation scores, badges, and customizable fields. Private messaging is built in. Notifications work. Reactions and likes are native. Topic subscriptions send email alerts.

bbPress has none of these without third-party plugins, and most of those third-party plugins haven’t been updated in years either.

Security and maintenance

This is perhaps the most critical difference for site owners who take security seriously.

bbPress has not received a security patch since November 2021. In the WordPress ecosystem, where new vulnerabilities are discovered weekly, running a plugin that hasn’t been updated in over three years is a liability. The Wordfence security plugin, used by over 4 million WordPress sites, now flags bbPress as “abandoned” in its vulnerability scans.

wpForo AI Toxic Content Detection interface
wpForo 3.0 AI toxic content detection, active protection, actively maintained

wpForo is actively maintained with regular updates, security patches, and new features. The 3.0 release introduced 360° AI-powered content moderation that doesn’t just catch spam, it detects toxic content, hate speech, and policy violations automatically with 99.9% accuracy across multiple layers.

When you choose a forum plugin, you’re not just choosing features. You’re choosing whether someone will be there to fix it when something breaks.

The migration path

If you’re currently running bbPress and ready to move, there are two paths:

Option 1: DIY migration. wpForo includes a built-in bbPress importer. You install wpForo, run the importer, and your forums, topics, replies, and users transfer over. The process takes minutes for small forums and a few hours for larger ones.

Option 2: Professional migration. If you want zero-downtime migration with URL redirects, SEO preservation, and verification, we handle bbPress-to-wpForo migrations as part of our 4,200+ completed migrations since 2010. We quote in 6-12 hours and don’t charge until the work is done.

The bottom line

The question isn’t whether wpForo is better than bbPress. It is, by every measurable metric. The question is how long you’re willing to run a forum plugin that hasn’t been updated in three and a half years, that security tools flag as abandoned, and that offers none of the features your members have come to expect in 2026.

Both plugins are free. Both run on WordPress. The only cost of switching is the time it takes to run the importer, and the reward is a forum that’s actively maintained, AI-powered, beautifully designed, and built for the next five years instead of stuck in 2021.
